Learning Approaches to Help Managers Succeed

November 19, 2009 (SmartPros) Just published research on learning and development trends for front-line and mid-level managers from Aberdeen Group shows that organizations making manager development a priority are outperforming their counterparts significantly.

The study, “Learning and Development: Arming Front-line and Mid-level Managers to Deliver People and Performance Results,” showed that companies with the strongest emphasis on learning and development for this key employee group improved employee performance by a 2-to-1 margin over all other organizations, and improved customer satisfaction by nearly 3-to-1.

“Organizations understand that managers are the lynchpin of the organization,” said Mollie Lombardi, research analyst, Aberdeen Group. “When front-line and mid-level managers have the right skills and tools in place they can have a huge impact on organizational performance, as well as the quality of services delivered and the engagement levels of their staff.” The key strategies to improve learning and development for managers identified by the research included defining core leadership competencies, integrating learning and development with performance and succession management activities, and involving senior executives in the development of managers.

The report outlines the key subject matter areas and delivery modalities utilized by top performing companies, and discusses the most widely used types of learning technologies. The research also addresses key learning measurement and management strategies.
