CPA Releases Add-Ins for Microsoft Word

Oct. 22, 2007 (SmartPros) Brad Smith, an Indianapolis CPA, has created two new Microsoft Office add-in programs that take the mystery out of creating formulas in Word.

Smith announced the release of "Formula Builder for MS Word" and "Financial Reporting Toolkit -- Accounting Edition."

"While Word has built in formula functionality, the process is so cumbersome, it's impractical to use," said Smith. "You need to know the table's cell address in order to write formulas, and Word doesn't disclose the address. You literally have to count the number of columns and rows to determine the cell address, and then hope you counted correctly."

Formula Builder for MS Word features the Formula Builder wizard. "Formula Builder determines the cell address for you and walks you through the steps of writing a formula," said Smith. "If you can write formulas in Excel, you can write formulas in Word using Formula Builder."

Formula Builder for MS Word also includes special copy and paste features just for formulas that preserve relative cell references in formulas copied to other cells. "Unlike Excel, which automatically updates relative cell references in copied formulas, Word copies formulas exactly as written," said Mr. Smith. "With my program, the relative cell reference is updated when you copy formulas just as it is in Excel."

The Accounting Edition is an upgrade version of Formula Builder for MS Word. In addition to Formula Builder, the Accounting Edition features Table Link and Financial Table Builder. The Table Link wizard makes it easy to link to data in any table in the existing Word document. The Financial Table Builder wizard creates tables preformatted for financial data built to user specifications.

"I designed the Accounting Edition for CPAs and managers involved in the financial reporting process," said Smith. "Having been involved in financial reporting myself for twenty-five years, I knew there were features missing in the core Word program that would benefit those involved in the process. My goal was to design an add-in program that would help fill that gap."

A trial version of the product is available for download at www.financialreportingtoolkit.com.
