Enron-Like Play Travels to New York

June 4, 2007 (SmartPros) A play with a plot reminiscent of the Enron and Arthur Andersen scandals will travel to New York to make its debut off-Broadway later this month.

"Professional Skeptism" -- written before the 2001 accounting scandals that enveloped and subsequently collapsed accounting firm Arthur Andersen and energy company Enron Corp. -- coincidentally tells the story of four auditors in a Big Five accounting firm struggling to survive amidst an audit scandal.

Prior to earning a degree in playwriting, the author of the play, James Rasheed, led a career in accounting as an auditor for a Big Eight firm, and served in a controller position for a medical company. The 40-year-old is a bank auditor in his "day job."

In the last few years, the show has had successful productions in Boston and South Carolina. Among its awards is the 2000-2001 Harold and Mimi Steinberg Prize for Best Original Play.

In its review, The Boston Globe wrote, "If you thought accountants lived lives as gray as their double-entry numbers, then James Rasheed's hilarious new play 'Professional Skepticism' ought to correct your (understandable) miscalculation."

Zootopia Theatre Company will present the New York premiere of the play from June 28 to July 15 at the Abingdon Theatre Arts Complex.
