The IRS was once known as the Internal Revenue Bureau. The name was changed in the 1950s when the agency underwent its frist major restructuring.
The first Form 1040 appeared in 1913, the same year that the income tax was enacted with the 16th Amendment.

Internal Revenue Service
The Internal Revenue Service is the nation's tax collection agency and administers the Internal Revenue Code enacted by Congress. Today, the IRS is managed under the IRS Restructuring and Reform Act of 1998, which prompted a comprehensive reorganization and modernization of the agency.
