Fortune released its 2007 "100 Best Companies to Work For" list earlier this week. The nation's four largest accounting firms, known as the Big Four, are sprinkled throughout the list: Ernst & Young (25), PricewaterhouseCooopers (58), Deloitte & Touche Tohmatsu (76) and, making its first appearance on the list, KPMG (97). In addition, the eleventh largest accounting firm, Plante & Moran, is ranked No. 32.

What makes them so great? Fortune highlights each firm's special perks. Ernst & Young installed a program that caters to senior staff (that complements its People First culture). PricewaterhouseCoopers gets kudos for financially assisting 43 of its employees who were impacted by Hurricane Katrina. KPMG matches 401(k) contributions to 75 cents per employee up to 5 percent. Deloitte offered extra vacation days to all 35,000 employees as a thank you for reaching record revenues.  And Plante & Moran gets high marks for maintaining one of the lowest turnover rates in the industry at just 11 percent, as well as the highest ratio of women partners at 19 percent.

No. 1 Google took the top spot for a variety of reasons, but most notable are the company's extraordinary on-site services, such as gourmet meals, laundry services, car-oil changes, and massages. "It's easy for Google's people to be energized, though, when their company is so stinking rich that it continues to ooze cash even while lavishing benefits on its staff," said Fortune's Adam Lashinsky. "Just eight years out of the garage, Google will surpass $10 billion in sales for 2006," he added.

Fortune noted that one of the greatest changes since the list debuted 10 years ago is the increase in telecommuting. Back then 18 companies on the list offered telecommuting; today 82 do.

Fortune said 446 companies vied for a slot on the list, which appears in the Jan. 22 issue and at www.fortune.com.
