Down the Road to Integration by David Gebler
The role of ethics within organizations is moving away from a function resident in one leader to a distributed set of competencies owned collectively by the leadership team. A company must look at where the ethics function sits inside the organization, and integrate corporate responsibility throughout.

What Happened at Hewlett-Packard?
Questionable and allegedly illegal practices were used by Hewlett-Packard's board to find out which board member was leaking confidential company information to the press. Former HP Chairwoman Patricia Dunn, along with HP's former chief ethics officer and three private investigators, are charged with four felony counts, including identity theft and use of false or fraudulent pretenses to obtain confidential information from a public utility. But in an editorial Dunn penned for The Wall Street Journal on Oct. 11, she asserts, "I did not run, supervise or direct the investigations." Also, in a CBS interview, Dunn cited another board member who resigned from the scandal, Thomas Perkins, as launching a "disinformation campaign" against her.
Meanwhile, one could call this scandal good timing for former (and ousted) HP CEO Carly Fiorina, whose new book Tough Choices: A Memoir is a top seller; Fiorina recently suggested her firing may have been due to boardroom troubles, and she too named Perkins as an instigator of her ousting. The entire charade at HP, a Silicon Valley star, begs the question, how do bad things happens at good companies?

Business Leaders Calling for "Sustainability"
Many companies draw up a sustainability report, or social report, examining how employees, customers, and even non-customers may be affected by their business in the long term.

Board Members See 14 Percent Pay Hike
Median total remuneration for independent directors at the 500 largest U.S. companies rose 14 percent to $185,000 this year, according to New York-based consultancy Steven Hall & Partners.

Trial Ordered for Ex-Kmart Executives
A federal judge has ordered former Kmart Chief Executive Charles Conaway and former financial chief John McDonald to stand trial on accusations they misled investors about the retailer's financial problems before its 2002 bankruptcy filing.
