Accountants' Prestige Ranks 16th

"I am going to read off a number of different occupations. For each, would you tell me if you feel it is an occupation of very great prestige, considerable prestige, some prestige or hardly any prestige at all?"

The final list -- ranked by the "very great prestige" response -- found firefighters at the top with 63 percent, followed by doctors (58 percent), nurses (55 percent), scientists (54 percent), teachers (52 percent) and military officers (51 percent).

On the other end of the spectrum, with the least amount of perceived prestige, are business executives (11 percent), stockbrokers (11 percent) and real estate agent/brokers (6 percent).

Harris Interactive has conducted this poll since 1977, and "accountant" was first added to the list in 1982. The ocupation debuted with a base 13 percent of U.S. adults who said they perceived the occupation as prestigious. Since then, the occupation has wavered in the mid-teens, took a big dip in 2004 (10 percent), and recovered this year to settle at 17 percent.

The poll was conducted by telephone between July 5 and 11, 2006, by Harris Interactive. Survey participants were asked, "I am going to read off a number of different occupations. For each, would you tell me if you feel it is an occupation of very great prestige, considerable prestige, some prestige or hardly any prestige at all?"

If Harris Interactive had asked YOU to rank the Accountant occupation, which option would you have chosen?
