AICPA Publishes Audit Committee Toolkit for Not-for-Profits

June 20, 2005 (SmartPros) The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants released an Audit Committee Toolkit for Not-for-Profit Organizations.

The publication provides audit committees of not-for-profits with a comprehensive set of best practices to help them discharge their responsibilities appropriately.  It complements a toolkit the AICPA developed for audit committees of public companies in response to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.

The Audit Committee Toolkit: Not-for-Profit Organizations is available for free download from the AICPA Audit Committee Effectiveness Center:

The toolkit covers governance topics ranging from developing an audit committee charter and hiring the chief audit executive to conducting an executive session and evaluating independent auditors.

"Audit committees have a big job to do, and it's difficult when the members have other responsibilities and the audit committee role is a part-time job with huge responsibilities," said John Morrow, AICPA Vice President, New Finance.  "The AICPA offers these resources to help audit committees and financial management execute sound corporate governance and, therefore, serve the public interest."
