The documentary film, "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room," based on the book by the same name, screened in three theaters on Friday -- two in New York and one in Houston -- and will be in theaters nationwide April 29.

The film is the inside story of one of history's greatest business scandals, in which top executives of America's seventh largest company walked away with over one billion dollars while investors and employees lost everything. The film benefits greatly from Fortune reporters Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind, who were among the first journalists to raise questions about Enron and who co-authored the best-selling book,"The Smartest Guys in the Room: The Amazing Rise and Scandalous Fall of Enron."

Using insider accounts and incendiary corporate audio and videotapes, director Alex Gibney shows the personal excesses of the Enron hierarchy and the moral vacuum that posed as corporate philosophy.

Early screenings of the documentary in Houston, the former headquarters of Enron, received standing ovations, according to the Houston Chronicle.

The initial screenings of the documentary coincided with the news on Thursday that former Enron chief executive and chairman Kenneth Lay will face personal banking charges in spring 2006, a delay requested by Lay. He will face fraud and conspiracy charges related to the collapse of Enron in January 2006.
