However, skipping the midday nosh on a regular basis can quickly lead to increased stress and, ultimately, burnout. Below are some tips on how to take time for lunch, even on your busiest days:
- Make a schedule. Plan each day by dividing your tasks between those that need to be completed in the morning and those that can be tackled during the afternoon. For example, regulation research projects usually require more intense work than filing or report assignments, so it’s better to schedule the more difficult activities for times of the day when you are most productive. For most people this is the morning. Schedule your lunch for a stopping place between the two distinct sets of projects.
- Be available. You may be reluctant to leave your desk because you worry your input will be needed on a critical assignment while you’re away. You can ask a coworker to cover for you until you’re back and give him or her your cell phone number so you can be reached at any time.
- Enjoy your lunch. This is your time to relax during the busy workday, so limit stress by avoiding major traffic routes and crowded restaurants.
- Maximize your time. If you feel like there is never enough time in the day, use part of your lunch hour to cross off something from your personal to-do list. Picking up clothes from the dry cleaner, buying a birthday gift and similar tasks can usually be completed during your break.
