New .Jobs Domain for Recruiting Coming in August

April 11, 2005 (SmartPros) A new Web site domain that companies can use to recruit for vacant positions will be available this summer, the Society for Human Resource Management said.

SHRM and ".jobs" have been granted permission from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers to create and manage the .jobs community.

Using .jobs will make the recruiting and job searching process more uniform and simpler for both employers as well as prospective employees, SHRM said. Any employer would be able to post open positions on an area of their Web site using the ".jobs" top-level domain, which would be commonly understood among job seekers.

For example, if a person were looking for a job with SHRM, they would simply type in the Web address "www.shrm.jobs"

SHRM research shows that the vast majority of organizations in the U.S. already advertise vacant positions on their company Web sites. Most HR professionals say the Internet yields the highest quality job applicants of all mediums and is the best return on investment.

"Once established, .jobs will do three things to make the current recruiting process better," said Tom Embrescia, chairman of .jobs.  "It’ll make the recruitment process simpler for companies to recruit; it’ll make recruiting uniform for all companies; and that means that job seekers will find the jobs faster, and companies will be able to more quickly fill open positions."

The first .jobs sites are expected to be launched sometime in August 2005.
