Get a Career Boost Through Professional Associations Dec. 15, 2004 (SmartPros) If you're looking for a job, or simply looking to give your career a boost, don't discount the power of a professional trade association. Susan Afan, the regional manager for RHI's northern California Professional Staffing Services division, said several incentives come from that membership card you have tucked in your wallet. According to Afan:
"Thinking back on my own experience, it gives you a chance to be more than just an observer," said Afan. "It gives you an opportunity to branch out beyond your comfort zone. For example, you can become a better public speaker through presentations. It's a good way to expand your own individual capabilities." A survey by Accountemps, also an RHI company, supports Afan's opinion. Twenty-seven percent of CFOs polled said a desire to learn new skills is the most valuable characteristic they look for in a job candidate. Max Messmer, Accountemps CEO, advised professionals to make a personal commitment to continued learning. "Absorb as much as you can. Attend trade conferences, read industry publications, take classes, network with others in your profession -- take every opportunity to identify and acquire the skills you need to be a peak performer." 2004 SmartPros Ltd.
