Early Returns Reflect More E-filing

March 3, 2004 (SmartPros) E-filing through February 20 has reached 29 million returns, an increase of eight percent over the same period last year, the Internal Revenue Service announced this week, citing early refund statistics.

"E-filing is off to another good start," said IRS Commissioner Mark W. Everson. "More and more taxpayers are discovering the benefits of e-file."

Of the individual income tax returns e-filed through February 20, over 20 million were filed by tax professionals, a 5.6 percent increase over 2003. More than 6.6 million taxpayers have e-filed from their personal computers, a 23 percent increase.

In addition, the early refund statistics show that certified refunds total $72.8 billion, up from $66.9 billion, and that the average refund is up $97, to $2,292 -- a 4.5 percent increase.
