IRS Briefs Tax Preparers on Shelter Enforcement

Feb. 6, 2004 (SmartPros) This month's Tax Talk Today broadcast, sponsored in part by the Internal Revenue Service, will focus on tax shelter enforcement.

Courtesy of the IRS and Treasury Department's aggressive crackdown on abusive tax motivated transactions, there are new rules requiring that taxpayers point out to the IRS that tax shelters are on their returns. The IRS is identifying promoters of shelters for special scrutiny and to learn who has invested in their shelters.

On Tuesday, February 10, at 2 p.m to 3 p.m. (EST), experts will tell tax preparation practitioners how the IRS is using all this information to target enforcement efforts.

Panel speakers include Kathy Petronchak, acting director, Pre-Filing and Technical Guidance in the IRS Large and Mid-Size Business (LMSB) Operating division; Thomas J. Callahan, chair of the Thompson Hine's Taxation Practice Group; and K. Steven Burgess, acting director for Abusive Tax Avoidance Transactions in Compliance Policy in the IRS Small Business/Self-Employed (SB/SE) division.
