Tax Prep Volunteers Get Free Training

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 18, 2003 (SmartPros) Three California counties in the San Francisco area are recruiting volunteers to help local tax preparation sites during tax season.

Earn It! Keep It! Save It! Bay Area, a new partnership of community organizations dedicated to helping low-income families claim the Earned Income Tax Credit and other tax benefits, needs volunteers from January through April 2004 in San Francisco, Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

Tax preparers need no tax experience in order to volunteer, as training in tax law and computer software will be provided. All trained volunteers are certified by the Internal Revenue Service.

In addition to tax preparers, the counties need interpreters who can speak Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese and other languages.

Although it varies by site, generally volunteers are needed for three-hour shifts, primarily on Saturdays and weeknights.

More information can be found at www.earnitkeepitsaveit.org.

Last year, these free tax preparation services helped over 4,000 low-income Bay Area taxpayers obtain over $5 million in refunds. Families who earned less than $35,000 in 2003 are eligible for free tax return services.
