IRS Discusses Collection Process Oct. 10, 2003 (SmartPros) Given the country's $280 billion in delinquent federal taxes, the IRS is considering enlisting private collection agencies to help clear some of those accounts. Panelists on this month's Internet broadcast of Tax Talk Today will share their expert opinions on collection reform. The October 14 broadcast, titled "IRS Collection -- The Times are a' Changing," will air live from 2-3 pm EST at www.TaxTalkToday.TV .
"Tax professionals can better guide their clients through the IRS collection process if they're up to speed on the changes being made. This broadcast will help them consult with their clients about submitting an 'offer in compromise' on back taxes," said Les Witmer, moderator of the broadcast. Witmer is a communications consultant and a 23-year veteran of the IRS, where he served as acting director of communications for the Wage and Investment Division.
Expert panelists include attorney and IRS veteran David C. Allie P.C., Attorney at Law, and Michael Evanish, Manager of MSC Business Services, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau. Also joining the panel will be the agency's Cheryl Sherwood, Director of Payment Compliance, Small Business/ Self-Employed Operating Division of the IRS; and Brady R. Bennett, Director of Strategy and Finance, Small Business/Self-Employed Operating Division of the IRS.
After an open discussion, the panelists will answer emailed, faxed or phoned-in viewer questions
about the changing IRS collection process.
