Bold Interview Tactics to Make a Favorable Impression September 2003 It's likely that the other people applying for the position you want have read the same tips for interviews you have: arrive on time, act professionally, be courteous, show how you can contribute to the company, etc. But if everyone is following the same guidelines, how can you separate yourself from the crowd? Following are seven steps, which, if you take them in a natural way, can give you an edge over your competition:
1. Don't rush. When you arrive at the interviewer's office, wait at the door until you're invited into the room. Take a deep breath and observe your surroundings. 2. Ask the first question. Once the initial small talk has concluded, demonstrate that you're familiar with the company and get a jump on the conversation with a simple question such as, "How will your recent acquisition of Company A impact accounting operations?" You may learn more information that you can use later in the conversation as well. 3. Be yourself. Don't be afraid to let your personality shine. Interviewers want to come away feeling like they know you; they don't want just pat answers. Develop a rapport and be confident in your ability to interview well. 4. Enjoy the silence. When awkward quiet moments arise, let the interviewer absorb what you've said and wait for the next question. Avoid talking for the sake of talking.
5. Make your pitch. If the meeting has gone well and you're certain that you want the job, propose a deal. Offer to perform a task (i.e., write a presentation or work a few days for no pay) that will showcase your abilities and initiative. 6. Set a return date. Before the hiring manager wraps up the conversation, let her know that you enjoyed the discussion and would like to meet again soon to talk about the position further
7. Leave something behind. Prior to the meeting, prepare a piece of strong work you've done that you can bring for the interviewer, such as a report you wrote during for an internship (provided you aren't violating any confidentiality issues) or a school project. This will help create a lasting impression and give the other person material to reference when later evaluating your qualifications.
