Setting the Stage for a Successful Interview

February 2003 If you've been invited for a job interview, you've already impressed the prospective employer with the accomplishments and skills listed on your resume. But while the resume is important, the one-on-one meeting with the hiring manager can make or break your chances of receiving a job offer. You must now win him or her over with your professionalism and enthusiasm for the position.

One of the key factors for a successful interview is how well you prepare for the discussion. According to a Portuguese proverb, "He who is well prepared has half won the battle."

Following are some suggestions for tipping the scales in your favor:
  • Do your homework. Learn about the company and its industry by researching both on the Internet or requesting information directly from the firm. You should also scan trade journals and industry newsletters on a regular basis. Use this information to prepare your responses to possible interview questions and to formulate questions of your own. In addition, find out who'll be interviewing you and his or her title.

  • Understand how you can help the company. Find out what the firm needs so you can highlight your strengths in those areas. Be prepared to present a summary of your qualifications in a concise, enthusiastic and professional manner.

  • Practice your answers. Although you may not know the exact questions you'll be asked, you can expect to be asked common interview queries, such as "Tell me about yourself" and "What are your strengths and weaknesses?" Think about how you'll answer these questions. When it's your turn to ask questions, inquire about what will be expected of you, the challenges of the position and typical assignments.

  • Stay focused on the big picture. The interviewer's primary objective is to determine if you meet the requirements of the position. Be prepared not only to prove that you're the right candidate but to make sure the company is right for you.
