Corporate Scandals Capture Nation's Attention

Dec. 13, 2002 The general public appeared this year to have as much interest in the corporate scandals as those in accounting and finance. Enron, Martha Stewart, and WorldCom were among the top news related searches conducted in 2002 on popular search engines. In fact, few topics topped Web browsers' thirst for scandal.

According to Ask Jeeves Web Properties, the Ask Jeeves search engine received more than two billion queries from consumers since Jan. 1, 2002, and accounting scandals repeatedly appeared in the top 15 news related searches. The Enron debacle landed at number three, and the Martha Stewart scandal came in as the 10th most popular search.

Stewart, chief executive of her self-named company, was also by far the most asked about executive involved in corporate accounting scandals, followed by Adelphia founder John Rigas, former Tyco CEO Dennis Kozlowski, former Enron CEO Ken Lay, and former Enron CFO Jeffrey Skilling.

Similarly, AOL reported that Martha Stewart became the "second most searched on news story, ranking higher than homeland security."
