Improve Your Job Search Prospects Through Networking

November 2002 Networking is one of the most valuable tools in your job search arsenal. Eighty percent of chief financial officers surveyed recently by Robert Half International said networking with other professionals in their industry is important to furthering their careers. In a related survey, technology executives identified referrals as their primary recruiting source.

The key to successful networking is getting as much mileage as you can from professional connections. Even if you’re not actively seeking a new position, establishing a broad range of contacts will help you remain current with industry trends and develop your interpersonal skills.

Below are some tips for successful networking:
  • Identify your contacts. Compile a list of people who might be in a position to help you, especially those who can offer insights about skills in demand or potential job openings. Current or former colleagues, family members and friends are all valuable resources. You may also have contacts through professional associations, alumni groups and community organizations.
  • Make the connection. Networking requires confidence and determination. Develop a 20-second sales pitch that conveys who you are and what you do. When approaching someone for the first time, introduce yourself, learn a bit about the individual and perhaps exchange business cards.
  • Maintain your network. Once you’ve established your contacts, keep in touch. Regular communication demonstrates professionalism and sincerity and will keep your network active.
  • Become a resource. Networking is as much about giving help as receiving it. Look for opportunities to provide your contacts with useful information, such as a relevant news article. Remember that you are part of others’ networks, so be responsive when someone requests your time or assistance.
