ACFE Kicks Off National Fraud Awareness Week

HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 5, 2002 The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners kicked off the third annual National Fraud Awareness Week Sunday in conjunction with the start of its annual fraud conference and trade show in Hollywood, Calif.

National Fraud Awareness Week (NFAW), Aug. 4-10, hosted by the 25-member ACFE and supported by public and private sector companies, is a time set aside to educate both businesses and consumers about the impact of fraud and white-collar crime.

The 13th Annual Fraud Conference & Trade Show this week in Hollywood kicked off NFAW, providing a meeting place for fraud professionals from around the world to discuss the latest in fraud detection, deterrence, and education.

Headlining the conference, Sherron Watkins, commonly labeled the Enron "whistleblower" for coming forward and reporting Enron's wrongdoing, will share her story with conference guests and the press in a presentation entitled "Enron: An Insider's View" at the working lunch today.

On the other side of the fraud fence, former white-collar criminal John Everroad, Jr. will discuss his past misdeeds at the working lunch on Tuesday, Aug. 6. Everroad was convicted in 1999 of embezzling nearly $300,000 from his Nebraska employer and spent 20 months in prison. Also on Tuesday, fraud examiners will learn about the legal trends and new laws that will affect their investigations, in a session presented by the assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi. J. Scott Newton, J.D., CFE, is also a member of the Association's Board of Regents.

The conference will draw nearly 1,200 anti-fraud professionals from around the world. The week's agenda includes an executive roundtable entitled "The Face of Identity Fraud", classes on cyberfraud, banking and health care fraud, financial statement fraud, current issues, and other timely topics, and post-conference lessons on introductory fraud examination techniques for the entry-level auditor or investigator.
