Bouncing Back From Career Setbacks

July 2002 Whether it's a failed project or a layoff, everyone faces obstacles and setbacks from time to time. While you can't expect to avoid them entirely, the way you respond to these challenges will determine the course of your professional growth. Learning from difficult situations is the most effective way to move forward with confidence.

Here are some tips for overcoming a career setback:

Take time to recover.  Acknowledge your emotions of anger or disappointment.  Allow yourself time to deal with these feelings but avoid dwelling on them for too long.  Instead, focus on how you'll meet your next set of challenges.

Reflect on the situation.  Ask yourself questions about what happened: What could you have done differently? What external factors impacted the outcome of the situation? Recognize that some things are out of your control and try to better manage those events you can control.

Put it in perspective. Failure is situational. Just because you were unsuccessful in one instance doesn’t mean you are a failure. Don’t let the event shake your confidence and keep you down.

Learn from your mistakes.  Remember what worked and what didn't. Analyze what could have been done differently to make the experience more positive.  Develop a strategy for effectively dealing with the situation if it happens again.

Ask for help.  Consult with a mentor, colleague or friend about how to handle and overcome your setback. Also consider joining a business association, such as the National Society of Accountants. Your involvement with these groups will broaden your network of professional contacts who can assist in dealing with the challenges you’ll face during your career.

Stay motivated.  Look for ways to boost your morale, whether it’s taking a course, participating in a business club on campus or volunteering. Participate in activities that will help you grow professionally and give you renewed enthusiasm
