Taking Advantage of Campus Recruiting Visits

July 2002 Did you know that the next opportunity to further your career might be right outside your classroom? On-campus recruiting days and job fairs are unique events designed for you, as a student, to speak with prospective employers and learn about their companies, any open positions they have and what it will take to be successful in your career. Of course, what you take away from these meetings depends on your preparation.

Following are some tips for ensuring you get the most out of these activities:

Know who's participating.  By learning about the companies that will visit your campus, you'll be in a better position to ask intelligent questions and discuss important issues, such as how the firm and its industry are changing. You'll also give yourself an advantage over your competition.

Market yourself.  In addition to developing a written version, practice delivering a 60-second "verbal" resume summarizing your work experience as well as future goals. Exhibit enthusiasm when describing your accomplishments and skills and explain how they will help you succeed.

Be professional.  If you've scheduled a meeting with a company representative, treat it like any other important interview. Listen intently to what is said and ask pertinent questions regarding the business or any job opportunities.  If you are interested in a particular position, let the recruiter know.

Follow up.  After your interview, send notes to the people you met with thanking them and conveying your enthusiasm for working for their companies. (It's a good idea to request business cards from recruiters. Make notes on the back of the business card about your conversation with that particular recruiter.)

On-campus recruiting events are a great way to build rapport with companies you may like to work with in the future. By diligently preparing for your meetings and effectively marketing your own qualifications, you will enhance your career prospects.
