Entry-Level Accounting Jobs Abundant; Grads Seek Strong Salaries Despite Recession

MAYNARD, Mass., April 23, 2002 Despite the recession and 5.7 unemployment rate last month, many college students that will earn their diplomas this spring have significant job opportunities waiting for them, according to data released by Monster.

Based on a comprehensive analysis of Monster job postings in the United States, entry-level job opportunities are abundant in accounting and finance, sales, administrative/support services, education, and non-profit.

These findings are consistent with those of the National Association of Colleges and Employers, which announced in March that the accounting industry is the top employer this year. NACE also confirmed that this is a tough job market for grads, who will find fewer employers offering hiring bonuses and top-flight starting salaries.

"With graduation just around the corner, this is the high season for 2002 college graduates to firm-up their future plans," said Ken Ramberg, senior vice president of MonsterTRAK, a career resource for college students and alumni. "Although it is a tougher job market than in recent years, opportunities still exist for this year's graduates; they just need to work a little harder to find them."

Ramberg said current top categories on MonsterTRAK include Accounting & Finance, Education and Non-Profit.

Monster found that 2002 college graduates still seek strong salaries, despite the recession. The average asking salary is $39,600, with students requesting $36,200 for accounting/auditing. This is in-line with the national average for entry-level accounting positions.
