BEYOND THE BROWSER From The E-Business Workplace: Discovering the Power of Enterprise Portals E-business Workplace availability is not limited to the personal computer-based Web browser. Conceptually, what works on a PC can work equally well on such devices as cell phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and set-top boxes (combined computer/television systems). Over time, the e-business Workplace will become capable of using wireless markup language (WML) as opposed to HTML. Within the workplace server will be the business intelligence that determines which parts of role content are accessible to what devices (bandwidth and display size will be the major constraints). Supported by increasingly sophisticated automatic conversion tools and more capable mobile devices, over time more and more role content will become available to an individual anytime and anywhere. Regardless of what communication device is used, one fundamental principle remains unchanged: the Workplace role concept is critical to controlling the flood of information and choices that otherwise could easily become unmanageable for a working individual. In the world of e-business and Web portals, physical matter is not important, and distance and time impose few constraints. Networks accelerate growth, and value rises exponentially with market share. E-business is forcing corporate executives to operate outside of their comfort zone. A company engaging in e-business is no longer defined solely by its product, history, and relationships to its customers and suppliers. As business processes and applications converge, competition increasingly comes from outside traditional industries or industry segments. Or select the page you'd like to jump to:
