Stocks Hit Hard On Restatements

April 4, 2002 (NY Post) A slew of companies are restating earnings in the wake of the Enron and Andersen disasters -- and it's killing their stocks.

Jeffrey Dachis, CEO of Razorfish, Inc. - a downtrodden dot-com trading at pennies on the dollar - notified the SEC that his company would file its annual report late.

The Internet consulting firm's stock ended the day at 0.14 cent, down 0.0075 cent.

Metromedia International, which runs phone and cable-television systems in Europe and China, saw its stock plummet 24 percent after filing for a delay in its annual report to regulators.

Metromedia shares fell 8 cents to 26 cents - their lowest close since the East-Rutherford, N.J.-based company went public in 1996. That stock has fallen 91 percent in the past year.

And restatements are having a huge effect on companies' stock.

Stillwater Mining Corp. saw its shares plunge more than 15 percent after the platinum producer said it might have to restate earnings.

Stillwater admitted yesterday that the SEC suggested that its methodology for determining reserves should be revised. The Columbus, Mont.-based mining stock fell to $15.47, down $3.15. Akorn Inc., a maker of drugs and eye treatments also admitted yesterday that the SEC plans to bring an enforcement action against it, claiming it overstated earnings in 2000. The Buffalo Grove, Ill.-based company saw its stock droop 10 cents to $3.62. Qwest Communications International Inc. is writing down between $20 million and $30 million because of new accounting changes.
