Making Reference Checks Work for You


March 2002 Most job seekers are accustomed to providing references to prospective employers. But are you aware how much weight these testimonials can carry? For many companies, hiring decisions depend on completion of a satisfactory reference check.



You can do your part by being proactive during the reference-checking process.  Here are some suggestions:

Do your homework. Develop a list of contacts in advance of your interview.  If the hiring manager asks for references, you'll be ready.  This shows initiative and may speed up the hiring process.

Prepare your references. Always ask permission first -- never provide someone's name as a reference without his or her prior approval. When speaking with your contacts, tell them how much you want the job and why you'd be a good fit. Encourage them to speak with the hiring manager and share their insights into your strengths and how you can benefit the firm.

Choose people who can help you.  Hopefully, your list of references includes people who will provide positive feedback. The best references are current and former supervisors, managers and coworkers. You can also include names of university professors and members of professional associations to which you belong.

Stay in contact with your references. Let them know when you've interviewed for a new job. Give them the name of the company, the person you met with and a brief description of the position. You should also provide them a copy of your resume, as the prospective employer will likely reference it during the call.

Say thank you. After you've given someone's name as a reference, send a thank-you note to let that person know you appreciate his or her help.  Let them know if you get the job, and stay in touch.  You never know when you'll need another reference.

Become a resource. As a show of gratitude for their support and assistance and to maintain your network, offer to help them in the future. And follow through on your commitment. Being a resource for your contacts will further cultivate a positive business relationship and benefit both of you.
