How to Conduct an Informational Interview

February 2002 Informational interviews can be an effective way to make new contacts, learn about a profession that interests you and enhance your employment prospects. Although they're not meant to elicit job offers, these meetings expose you to people who are in a position to hire you or recommend you to colleagues. Therefore, they should be given the same attention you would devote to preparing for a job interview.

Here are some tips on how to make the most of informational interviews:

Take the right approach. When meeting with a contact, remember that your primary objective is to get information -- not ask for a job. Seek advice about particular businesses, industry trends, skill sets in demand and other issues impacting the accounting profession.

Prepare. Develop questions that demonstrate your interests and knowledge. Be ready to speak enthusiastically and clearly when asked about your current situation, skills, accomplishments and goals.

Stay focused. Create an agenda outlining the specific areas you want to cover, and ask as many questions as appropriate during the meeting. Be respectful of the other person's schedule by avoiding distractions and starting and stopping the interview on time.

Listen attentively. Take notes during the discussion. After the meeting is finished, review what was said and write down any additional thoughts or comments.

Follow up. At the end of the interview, ask for names of other people who may be able to help you. Then, within the next couple of days, send a thank-you note via regular mail. Continue fostering this relationship by passing along any relevant articles or professional association updates.
