Andersen Admits to Destroying Enron Documents NEW YORK, Jan. 14, 2002 If Arthur Andersen wasn't already in over its head, perhaps it is now. The accounting firm admitted in a statement last week that it destroyed documents related to its audit of bankrupt energy titan Enron Corp. "In recent months individuals in the firm involved with the Enron engagement disposed of a significant but undetermined number of electronic and paper documents and correspondence relating to the Enron engagement," it said in a brief statement Thursday. Andersen notified the Securities and Exchange Commission and Department of Justice about the matter, as well as congressional committees and other agencies investigating the collapse of Enron. "Destruction of documents is obviously an extremely serious matter," commission enforcement director Stephen Cutler said in a statement. "Documents are an essential ingredient in our investigation," he added. However, he noted that the destruction of documents will not deter an investigation.
