Bush Nominates Big 5 Officials for SEC

WASHINGTON, Dec. 31, 2001 President Bush has nominated Paul S. Akins and Cynthia A. Glassman to fill vacancies on the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Both nominees come from Big Five accounting firms; Atkins is a PricewaterhouseCoopers partner and Glassman is a principal at Ernst & Young.

Once confirmed by the Senate, Atkins and Glassman will join SEC chairman Harvey Pitt during a time when the accounting industry is under immense pressure and intense scrutiny due to the collapse of Fortune 500 energy titan, Enron Corp. SEC investigators subpoenaed Andersen, Enron's outside auditor, earlier this month.

The Washington Post reported that members of Big Five firms were among Bush's most generous donors during the presidential campaign. Federal election records compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics show accountants gave more than $1.1 million to Bush.
