Technology Skills Pay off for Accounting Professionals

December 2001 Technology is playing a critical role in the evolution of the accounting profession. In a recent Robert Half International survey, 39 percent of chief financial officers (CFOs) said they'll be more involved with information systems initiatives over the next few years, making it critical for accounting professionals to continually sharpen their technical knowledge and skills.

More and more accountants are guiding their firms through financial systems conversions and upgrades. With these new systems come greater efficiencies in analyzing complex financial data and preparing more detailed reports.

But the need for technical savvy goes beyond data collection and analysis. Success in the accounting field requires an understanding of broader areas such as e-commerce, business applications development and systems security. Financial professionals also need to be able to use databases, spreadsheets and presentation software, such as PowerPoint.

In addition, work with Internet-based financial applications has become increasingly common for accounting professionals. And the ability to communicate about technical issues with information technology (IT) staff as well as non-technical colleagues is a requisite.

So how can you become a technology guru? Many universities now include information technology classes as part of their accounting curriculum, and some schools even offer a double major in the two disciplines. You can also gain valuable experience through online courses, an internship or temporary assignments.

Ultimately, strong technology skills will place you high in demand among prospective employers. They can also improve your leverage during compensation negotiations. By taking every opportunity to build your technical expertise, you'll improve your chances for long-term career advancement.
