E&Y Grabs Top Ranking in Annual Accounting Professors Survey Andersen, PricewaterhouseCoopers Tumble ATLANTA, Aug. 7, 2001 (SmartPros)(Strafford) The nation's accounting professors rated Ernst & Young as the profession's best firm in a new survey by CPA Personnel Report, while Andersen failed to at least tie for the top spot for the first time in 20 years. Ernst & Young topped Deloitte & Touche and Andersen with the highest overall rating in CPA Personnel Report's Annual Survey of Accounting Professors--2001.
Andersen (known until this year as Arthur Andersen) dominated previous rankings with a first place finish until last year, when it was tied by PricewaterhouseCoopers. This year, PricewaterhouseCoopers dropped to fourth place, followed by KPMG, BDO Seidman, Grant Thornton and McGladrey & Pullen.
In addition to an overall rating, the nation's biggest CPA firms are rated based on outlook for business success, client service quality, technical reputation, staff training, compensation, career opportunities and work/life balance.
Each year, CPA Personnel Report's survey asks U.S. accounting professors to grade the profession's dominant firms. Detailed survey results and rankings appear in the newsletter's August edition.
Ernst & Young scored particularly high on outlook for business success, helped by several wins of audit engagements for huge corporations. Observers also credited the firm for selling its consulting practice to Cap Gemini quickly and decisively, in contrast to how long that took at other Big Five firms.
