Error Found in Letters Sent to Thousands of EITC Claimants, Says IRS

WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 31, 2001 (SmartPros) Earned Income Tax Credit claimants should call the Internal Revenue Service, not state agencies, with their questions, the IRS is urging after it send out 286,000 letters containing misinformation.

After sending out the letters, which raised questions about whether EITC claimants were entitled to the EITC claimed on their 1999 returns, the IRS realized the letters mistakenly instructed taxpayers with child custody issues to call their state agencies. However, state agencies cannot resolve EITC issues, the IRS said.

Instead, taxpayers should call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. In addition, the IRS said it is sending out a follow-up letter those taxpayers to clarify the mistake.
