Former National Taxpayer Advocate Joins Big Five Firm SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 9, 2001 (SmartPros) Former National Taxpayer Advocate W. Val Oveson has taken a post at a Big Five firm. Oveson, who became the first person from outside the Internal Revenue Service to hold the position of National Taxpayer Advocate under a provision of the IRS Restructuring and Reform Act of 1998, has left Washington D.C. and returned to Utah, where he has joined PricewaterhouseCoopers as a managing director in the firm's State Tax Consulting Practice in Salt Lake City. In his new post, Oveson's primary role will be to build PwC's State and Local Tax Controversy practice throughout the U.S. "Val's work resolving taxpayer problems at the IRS, combined with his extensive experience at the state level, provides an innovative perspective in expanding our already strong base of state and local tax controversy specialists throughout the country," said Bruce Daigh, National Practice Leader of the State Tax Consulting Practice. Oveson reorganized the Taxpayer Advocate program and is credited with making it easier for taxpayers to resolve disputes with the IRS. He received the Exceptional Service Award from Secretary of the Treasury Lawrence Summers and the Commissioner's Award from Commissioner Charles O. Rossotti for his accomplishments as National Taxpayer Advocate. Prior to joining the IRS in 1998, Oveson served as chairman of the Utah State Tax Commission for five years. He also served as chairman of the Multistate Tax Commission from 1996 to 1998, and was twice elected Utah State Lieutenant Governor. -- SmartPros News Staff Send comments to information@smartpros.com. 2001, Smartpros Ltd.
