H&R Block Names President and CEO

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Dec. 16, 2000 (SmartPros) A former American Express senior vice president will serve as the president and chief executive for tax giant H&R Block Inc.

Mark A. Ernst will become Block's president and CEO on Jan. 1, 2001.

Mark A. Ernst, 42, will become Block's president and chief executive on Jan. 1, 2001. Frank L. Salizzoni, 62, will retire as chief executive on Dec. 31, 2000, but will continue as chairman of the board, the company stated.

Both moves were part of Block's succession plan, which the board approved in June when the company announced that its founder, Henry W. Bloch, would retire as chairman of the board in September. Bloch, 78, now serves as honorary chairman of the board.

Ernst joined H&R Block in September 1998 as executive vice president and chief operating officer after working as a senior vice president for American Express Company in Minneapolis. Before joining American Express, he worked several years in the tax, investment and corporate advisory services department at Coopers & Lybrand.

Ernst was elected to Block's board of directors and named president and chief operating officer in September 1999.
