Andersen Consulting, U.S. Postal Service Develop System to Improve Mail Delivery WASHINGTON, D.C., Dec. 13, 2000 (SmartPros) Andersen Consulting, which will become Accenture on Jan. 1, and the U.S. Postal Service sealed a deal to develop a system to reduce operational costs and improve mail delivery. The project, known as the Delivery Operations Information System (DOIS), provides the Delivery Unit supervisor with up-to-date data from which solid business decisions can be made, said Andersen Consulting. The system will be deployed to more than 5,000 delivery facilities nationwide. More than 10,000 employees will be trained to use the system by the U.S. Postal Service and Andersen Consulting, the firm stated. DOIS is one of four initiatives that exist under the Information Platform program. Under the program, Andersen is also working to modernize the service's mail assignment process with the Surface Air Management System (SAMS), to provide useful information on the status of mail operations with the pilot Processing Operations Information System (POIS), and to enable mailers to track letters by applying bar codes to the envelopes with a system called CONFIRM. "Once fully implemented, the overall Information Platform program is expected to achieve $1 billion in benefits per year for the U.S. Postal Service," said Sylvain Bacon, the Anderson Consulting partner responsible for the U.S. Postal Service contract. -- SmartPros News Staff Send comments to information@smartpros.com. 2000, Smartpros Ltd.
