AICPA Inks Deal to Computerize CPA Exam by 2003 NEW YORK, Nov. 9, 2000 (SmartPros) The American Institute of CPAs has inked a deal with a technology-based testing company to convert the Uniform CPA Exam to a computerized format in three years. Baltimore-based Prometric will work with the Institute, the state boards of accountancy, and the National Association of the Boards of Accountancy to transition the exam. The AICPA expects to roll out the computerized format in 2003. The move is aimed at providing a test that "more closely replicates real-world situations," the AICPA said. "In order to safeguard the public's interest, today's CPA must understand business practices completely, use technology effectively, research authoritative literature and clearly communicate their conclusions," said Barry Melancon, president and chief executive of the AICPA. "We are rapidly approaching a time when the paper-based exam will not be able to protect the public interest adequately." The current paper-and-pencil exam is administered twice a year. With the computerized version, candidates will be able to sit for the test up to four times a year at more than 300 testing centers, which will offer the exam up to six days a week, the Institute said. -- SmartPros News Staff Send comments to accountingeditor@pro2net 2000, Smartpros Ltd.
