Committee Holds Competition to Develop XBRL SMITHFIELD, R.I., Nov. 2, 2000 (SmartPros) The XBRL Committee, a non-profit group of more than 70 accounting, software and financial services companies, is sponsoring an academic competition for students to take part in the development of the Extensible Business Reporting Language, known as XBRL. The Internet-enabled language is based on the Extensible Markup Language, known as XML. The competition is aimed at getting students involved in creating XBRL taxonomies and conducting research on its potential impact. Students and faculty advisors in accounting, accounting information systems, finance, information sciences and related fields are eligible to participate. To be eligible, applicants must be registered students in an institute of higher learning, concentrating in accounting, AIS, finance, information sciences or related disciplines in the fall of 2000. Student teams may consist of two to five students. A full-time faculty member must sponsor a student team. Taxonomies, application developments, and research papers developed during school year 2000-2001 are eligible for the competition. The deadline for intent to submit is Nov. 15, 2000. Completed projects and papers must be submitted by March 1, 2001. Winners will be honored at a joint XBRL-Institute of Management Accountants' meeting in June 2001 in New Orleans.
