Fall Meeting Marks CERCA's Largest to Date

WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct. 19, 2000 (SmartPros) E-filing and e-government took center stage at the annual fall meeting of the Council for Electronic Revenue Communication Advancement here.

The two-day event last week marked CERCA's largest yet with more than 200 attendees, according to executive director Mike Cavanagh.

CERCA, which he described as "essentially the ETA (Electronic Tax Administration) trade association," is a non-profit group aimed at promoting the growth of e-filing. The organization counts some 60 companies among its members, including Jackson Hewitt, H&R Block and Intuit.

The meeting, which usually focuses on developments in electronic filing, this year expanded its focus to look at what other areas of government are doing in the electronic arena, according to Cavanagh.

"Traditionally, our core issue is what the key developments are in electronic tax filing," Cavanagh said. "This year, we expanded that theme to include e-government, because we're seeing a range of e-filing and e-government initiatives in various government agencies."

For instance, he noted that executives from the Department of Agriculture and U.S. Customs Service were among the speakers at the event.

Other speakers included Internal Revenue Service chief information officer Paul J. Cosgrove, Terry Lutes, interim assistant commissioner of the IRS Electronic Tax Administration, and Dan Tarantin, president of Jackson Hewitt.
