The three comprehensive examinations which make up the core requirement of the CGFM program are:
Exam 1: Government Environment
Exam 2: Governmental Accounting, Financial Reporting and Budgeting
Exam 3: Governmental Financial Management and Control
Each of the three separate examinations is structured to require a candidate to demonstrate primarily a general familiarity, understanding and appreciation of the subject area. However, portions of each examination, particularly Examination 2, require a more detailed knowledge of specific techniques, standards, procedures and practices unique to either the federal government or state and local governments.
The three CGFM examinations are administered year-round in a multiple-choice, computerized format on behalf of AGA by Sylvan Prometric at their Sylvan Technology Centers. This computer-based administration allows the CGFM examinations to be offered securely in more than 300 locations in the United States, reducing travel costs and allowing candidates to schedule exams at their convenience.
The Exam Process
- Step One: Complete the Online Application or call 800-AGA-7211 to have an Application mailed to you.
- Step Two: Submit the Application to AGA with the requested documentation and $75 fee.
- Step Three: AGA will mail you a Confirmation of Eligibility.
- Step Four: Call 888-AGA-EXAM to schedule and pay for your tests - you may schedule them one at a time ($150 each) or all three in one phone call ($395). Choose from over 300 convenient locations.
- Step Five: Take your tests on computer - approximately 100 questions each.
- Step Six: Get your results immediately - an added bonus of taking a test on computer.
- Step Seven: After your official passing scores are received at the AGA office and you have met all other requirements you will be sent your certificate.
