IRS Urges Taxpayers to Check Spouse's Name and Number on Returns

WASHINGTON D.C., Oct. 11, 2000 (SmartPros) Taxpayers should check their spouse's name and identification number for accuracy on tax returns, urges the Internal Revenue Service.

In an effort to decrease errors this coming year, the IRS is sending out letters to 2.4 million taxpayers who filed a joint 1999 return on which the name and identification number for the second spouse listed did not match IRS records. The IRS is urging these taxpayers to double check the name and number used on the return. The mailings began last month and will continue until mid-November.

In the past, the IRS has not accepted electronic returns with any name or number mismatch. It has also reduced tax benefits claimed on paper returns when there was a name or number mismatch for the first spouse listed on a joint return or any dependent. This coming year, the IRS will do the same for both spouses on a paper-filed joint return, the IRS said.
