Congress to Boost IRS Funding by $220 Million WASHINGTON D.C., Oct. 11, 2000 (SmartPros) House and Senate lawmakers voted to supplement the fiscal 2001 Internal Revenue Service budget by $220 million, according to a report by Tax Analysts. According to the report, H.R. 4475, approved in both chambers as part of the transportation conference report, would provide $72 million for the IRS's Information Technology Investment Account, $141 million for the agency's Staffing Tax Administration for Balance and Equity initiative, and $3.1 million for the Financial Crime Enforcement Network's Gateway program. It would also provide $4.8 million for 35 agents to participate in Joint Terrorism Task Forces. The conference report directs the IRS to delay implementing free Internet tax filing services until the agency reports to the appropriations committees on recent Electronic Tax Administration Advisory Committee recommendations on the issue, Tax Analysts said. In June, ETAAC told Congress it was inappropriate for the IRS to offer no-cost electronic filing over the Internet, either by developing its own software or aligning itself with a number of authorized e-file providers. Under the conference report, the IRS would be required to make recommendations addressing the concerns raised by ETAAC within 120 days of enactment. The supplemental IRS funding reportedly cleared the House 344 to 50 and the Senate 78 to 10. -- SmartPros News Staff Send comments to information@smartpros.com |
