(March 8, 1999) Yu has served the computer industry in a broad range of roles, including systems developer, systems consultant, and senior manager. In 1997, he co-founded an Internet service designed for accountants and auditors and is currently the executive editor of AccountantsLedger.com and ITAudit.org. He is also a technical advisor to the IFAC Information Technology Committee. In this interview, Yu discusses how the Internet has changed the nature of accounting and auditing.

Yu describes the components of ITAudit.org, which include an online magazine, an extensive reference library, a threaded discussions area and a yellow page section for vendors.

Yu explains why his organization chose the Internet as its medium, and outlines the benefits of publishing online. He cites its international scope, timeliness, low cost and search capabilities.

According to Yu, those accountants and auditors who are willing to embrace technology will be successful because technology is not only pervasive and empowering, but enabling as well.

Small firms were at a disadvantage before the Internet because they did not have access to timely and expensive research. Yu says the Internet gives small firms a better chance to compete.

Yu predicts that issues surrounding the year 2000, e-commerce, privacy and security will be the greatest challenges facing accountants and auditors in the next few years.

Yu says accountants and auditors are entering a very competitive phase, and advises them to engage in "lifetime learning" by reading online publications, taking online CPE courses and networking.
