Church Ordered to Vacate Property to Satisfy IRS Debt

INDIANAPOLIS, Oct. 5, 2000 (SmartPros) In a long feud between church and state, a federal judge here has ordered members of a congregation to vacate a church in order to satisfy a debt of nearly $6 million to the Internal Revenue Service, according to news reports.

U.S. District chief judge Sarah Evans Barker has ordered the Indianapolis Baptist Temple to move out by Nov. 14. so the IRS can then sell the building to satisfy IBT's debt, the Associated Press reported.

The dispute, which dates back to 1984, stems from the church's refusal to withhold Social Security and income taxes from its employees. The IRS claims the unpaid taxes, penalties and interest total nearly $6 million, AP said.

"I'm not a prophet, but I believe we're going to be in this building longer than Nov. 14," Rev. Greg Dixon Jr., head of the congregation, reportedly told AP. "We've had deadlines before, and those dealines have been pushed back.
