Proofread Those Essays

(SmartPros) With the exception of the business law and professional responsibilities section, candidates find they can complete the exam with time to spare. If you find this is the case, don’t leave early. If you do, you may really be kicking yourself when you receive a score of 73 or 74. Close, but no pass.

[Editor's Note: this article is in reference to the old paper-based exam, not the computer-based exam that is now in use.]

Don't take chances. Earn points by following these easy proofreading tips:

  • Begin by rereading the question. If there is more than one question, such as part a, part b, and part c, read each question part individually to refresh your mind about the exact question.
  • Now, read your answer response. Make sure your answer addresses the question. Did you answer what was asked?
  • After you have reread your answer, stop and think about facts that you could add. It’s never too late to enter additional concepts.
  • Read your response carefully, making sure that simple words such as "not" and "no" have not been omitted from your answer.
  • Take a deep breath and think about your response. Does it say everything that you think it should? Is your response complete?
  • Yes, correct the grammar and check the punctuation. Go for those writing points.

If you leave the exam early, you will never forgive yourself if you don’t pass. However, if you stay and fight for those points, you greatly increase your chances of passing.
