Editorial Review
This CD-ROM is offered free to community banks with less than $2.5 billion in total assets to help the institution discover, define and determine the best Web site model for its customer base. The Executive Strategy Tool offers information gathered by RSM McGladrey, Inc., during a survey of 494 community bank Web sites. RSM McGladrey reviewed the sites using the following criteria: design/layout, customer service, connectivity, information and overall quality. The company then rated the sites and chose the 20 most effective. This comprehensive report defines the purpose of each criteria used to compile the list of "most outstanding Web sites." Those definitions alone are helpful for understanding the structure and capabilities — and the overall importance — of a bank Web presence.

Unfortunately, the information gathered represents only 494 financial institutions. There are approximately 9,500 community banks in the United States. "The reason the software is free is so that when a person takes the survey, we can collect the data for our next year's study. In 1999, we had about 500 Web sites in the study, but we would like many more as it will help get more accurate results," said Loree Raker Miles, the national marketing director for RSM McGladrey, Inc., in St. Paul, Minn.

Community bank personnel interested in or responsible for establishing a Web presence for their financial institution should thoroughly devour this 45-page study. The information contained in its pages is very comprehensive, easy to understand and to apply. Annual studies will be completed in the fall of each year (look for the next release in end-of-year 2000) with more banks participating and more topics covered.
