Defining the Language of Dress Codes July 31, 2000 (SmartPros) Words such as appropriateness, boundaries and respect are often thrown around when discussing workplace dress policies. Here are the definitions supplied by DressingWell.com: "Appropriateness" means considering the work environment as well as the day's activities when deciding what to wear. For example, someone working at a traditional institution, like a bank or a law firm, is well served by viewing casual dress as a relaxed version of his or her regular business style. No matter what day of the week or what industry people are in, consistency in the way they dress goes a long way in establishing trust and credibility with business contacts.
Setting proper business "boundaries" through dress means making sure outfits provide proper coverage at the neckline and hemline. Casual day or not, inappropriate dress is anything that is distracting and calls attention away from the business at hand. Wearing nylons, socks and closed-toe footwear should be thought of as a way to create good boundaries in a business setting.
Showing "respect" for yourself, colleagues, customers and management means being mindful of how others may view dressing choices. For example, wearing jeans, sneakers, hats and t-shirts -- especially with logos not associated with the company -- all have the potential to be viewed as a sign of disrespect when worn to work.
