Accounting Students Convene in Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C, Aug. 11, 2000 (SmartPros) Over 1,000 accounting college majors were descending on the nation's capital yesterday to kick off the two-day Beta Alpha Psi annual meeting.

A Beta Alpha Psi volunteer pauses while helping plant bamboo trees for soon-to-be-arriving Panda bears at the National Zoo as part of the annual meeting's community service initiative.

On the first day, students and organizers fanned out through Washington to perform community service, including helping at a homeless shelter, a senior citizens center, a used clothing store, and the National Zoo.

"They come here for the programs, both professional and technical," said Penelope Yunker of Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill., a past resident and a coordinator of this year's event.

Topics on the agenda include an address from American Institute of CPAs chairman Bob Elliott, reports on chapter activities, discussions on ethics, and guidance on careers.
