Product Background
  • Why was this product developed?
This product was developed to afford financial advisers a comprehensive overview of a client's total financial situation. It goes far beyond the usual cataloging of what are considered traditional investment assets, such as mutual funds, stocks and bonds. The information recorded includes details of the client's:

  • Personal information
  • Net worth
  • Cash flow
  • Medical insurance and history
  • Disability coverage
  • Emergency funds
  • Consumer debt
  • Property and casualty insurance coverage
  • Long Term Care coverage
  • College funding
  • Retirement funding
  • Life insurance coverage
  • Estate planning vehicles
  • Any client-specified special needs

Having an overview of these areas, coupled with the client's financial objectives and investment profile, allows the adviser an opportunity to custom-tailor an investment program that will meet the client's needs and minimize risk to a level tolerable to his or her unique situation.
  • Who are its most common users?
Registered representatives and registered investment adviser agents affiliated with H.D. Vest. They utilize the software to help formulate investment advice for their clients. Of course, clients can be thought of as the ultimate users as this information is then utilized to assist in the investment selection process.
  • What similar products are offered in the same market?
Commercial programs that share some similar features with H.D. Vest's Financial Check-Up System include Easy Money for Windows and Portfolio 2000.
  • What improvements were made during the most recent upgrade?
    Unknown
  • Does the program have any bugs?
    None that the author encountered.

Benefits & Bugs
+ Allows the financial professional a comprehensive overview of a client's financial state. This overview serves as an excellent foundation from which to launch a comprehensive financial plan that makes sense for the client.

+ The program highlights often overlooked financial areas for clients. This allows the client (and his or her financial planner) to better plan for a successful financial future by making timely decisions based on a wide breadth of information.

+ The program collects data input on a series of worksheets and displays a summary of critical data for use by the investment professional.

- It is necessary to input the client information in a specific sequence (at least for the first three categories: client, net worth, and cash flow, respectively). The user must seek out this fact in the Help section. In the author's opinion, it should either be clearly evident by passive notification or else the program should be re-engineered to allow input in any sequence.

- The interface is under-automated. While the program is fully functional, it could stand to be modernized and automated a bit. It would be a nice touch to have the program integrated with the 1040 Analyst program (see below, under Purchase Information).

- While the program does an excellent job of cataloging client information, it would enhance functionality if it also had an investment strategy module that allowed the input and analysis of client objectives and possible investment strategies to meet those goals.

Editorial Review
The H.D. Vest Financial Check-Up System provides the financial professional with an automated method to record extensive information detailing a client's overall financial condition. Subsequent analysis of this information can then be utilized to tailor an investment strategy to the unique needs of the client and, many times, it also serves to highlight gaps in the client's financial plan. Use of this and similar programs serve to broaden the scope of knowledge afforded to the financial professional and serve to increase the effectiveness of the advice they dispense.

Many times an investment is decided upon for its own unique attributes; however, to be most beneficial, the client should be encouraged to define specific financial goals and then select individual investments which best support meeting those unique goals. The financial professional should use the tools available to "coach" the client on how to best reach their objectives and protect their finances, both now and in the future. The H.D. Vest Financial Check-Up System fits the bill in this respect and is an excellent and powerful tool to aid financial professionals.
