Think Positive. . . Positive Grading!

(SmartPros) Throughout college students get conditioned to receiving exam scores where the professor has spent a great deal of time and energy subtracting points for wrong answers. Understand that the CPA exam grading is completed using the exact opposite approach. The CPA exam is positively graded.

[Editor's Note: this article is in reference to the old paper-based exam, not the computer-based exam that is now in use.]

What does positive grading entail? On each and every exam section, a candidate begins with a score of zero. As the candidate works through the exam questions, points are earned only when the question is answered correctly. Candidates are not penalized for guessing. In fact, it is wise to answer all questions, even if it means making an outright guess on some. A guess means you have some hope of earning a point or two.

What are the dangers of positive grading? The candidate must attempt to answer as many questions as possible. No answer, no chance to earn points. Therefore, time management is crucial. If you run out of time and don’t complete the exam, you haven’t given yourself a chance to earn points.

When it comes to essays, don’t be afraid to say everything you know about the subject matter. Be sure the concepts you are discussing are relevant. Don’t leave the knowledge in your mind. Give the graders something to grade. Fight for those points by stating what you know.
